Traversal is a composition for virtual performance exploring connectivity between worlds. As the name implies, it is a temporary link between the live organ in Ball State University's Sursa Hall and the virtual world of Second Life. "Physical" actions and events in the virtual realm compose the work in real time with the end product being a physical and aural realization of virtual performance.
The premier performance at the EM|One concert featured Nick Johnson and Jake Baxter performing on a giant structure in the virtual world of Second Life. As various bricks and blocks were shifted around, their physical interactions - hitting the water, colliding with walls and other blocks - were used to create performance gestures on the organ in Sursa hall.&
;nbsp; John Fillwalk, who had created the performance structure as well as collaboratively conceptualized the work, used his avatar as a camera to follow the performance and project his vantage point to the audience. Jesse Allison composed the controllable sonic mayhem, and managed the communications link between the virtual and real during the performance.
